Welcome message:
On behalf of all the members of biochemistry department –Faculty of
Pharmacy- Ain Shams University. We are delighted to welcome you in
the facility currently localized inside the new building of the faculty of
pharmacy-Ain Shams University . Our mission in the department is to
provide both undergraduate and postgraduate students with advanced
knowledge in the fields of basic and clinical biochemistry, in
addition to elaboration of high quality research with good impact on
the medical and scientific societies as well as human health.
The
integration of knowledge provided by studying basic and clinical
biochemistry, basic and clinical pharmacy carries a great
opportunity for the Ain Shams pharmacy graduates to occupy a high
rank among other pharmacy graduates in Egypt
Responsibilities:
The
department is basically responsible of teaching basic and clinical
biochemistry to undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as
organizing and supervising the teaching of other related repuisite
postgraduate courses such as molecular biology, chemical pathology,
genetics and tissue chemistry, hematology and nutrition.
On the
other hand , the department is keen to elaborate advanced research
in wide fields of basic and clinical biochemistry with major
emphasis on cardiovascular and metabolic disorders.
Aims:
Students should recognize the biological reactions that occur in
living tissues and be able to integrate, interpret and explain
several phenomena related to normal and pathological conditions of
human body. These objectives can be achieved through the work in
three principal domains:
1) Cognitive domain:
Concerns
with increasing scientific knowledge. At the end of the study
students should be able to :
a-
Recognize the biochemical reactions involved in the metabolism of
carbohydrates, lipids and proteins in the human body.
b-Describe
the importance of balanced diet in the maintenance of healthy
individuals. Students should also be able to evaluate and correct
any deficiency related to nutritional supplements.
c-Recognize some information about recent developments in science
such as molecular biology , genetic engineering and immunology.
d-Describe the theoretical and practical bases behind the use of
instrumentation in biochemistry.
e-Identify qualitatively and quantitatively the contents of human
biological fluids such as blood , urine, saliva and bile.
2)
Psychomotor domain:
Improves
technical and integrative capabilities through:
a-Allow student to operate different instruments and recognize
several techniques in biochemistry such as spectrophotometry,
centrifugation and clinical enzymology.
b-Training students to identify, evaluate and interpret clinical
data obtained from normal and pathological samples.
c-Distinguish the differences between reactions in animal living
tissues from reactions that occur in test tubes (organic chemistry),
in plants(pharmacognosy), or in micro-organisms(microbiology).
d-Integrate the information studied in different areas of
biochemistry and relate that to other fields of study e.g:
microbiology, physiology and pharmacology.
3) Affective domain:
Concerns with implantation of moral and scientific values in
students by direct conversation and giving information on ethics and
principles of :
a- Use
of biochemical and clinical information in the different areas of
pharmaceutical fields either in public pharmacy , hospital pharmacy,
pharmaceutical companies, medical laboratories, or research centers.
b-Handling of patients morally and scientifically ,specially in
medical laboratories and public pharmacies
c-Animal
care in scientific research
d-Advantages
and disadvantages of new techniques of genetic engineering and their
impact on human health ,medicine and drug discovery.
