Our department is one of the most popular in the faculty of Pharmacy given that we have a busy schedule teaching pre-pharmacy, 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th year students. Our department members include 3 professors,2 lecturers , 18 graduate students and 5 technicians, comprising different educational backgrounds, offering the best of teaching as well as research skills. So, come investigate the mystical world of natural products, filled with fascinating microscopical beauty, fragrant miracle plants and mysterious phytochemical conclusions, with our special touch of Egyptian folklore; after all, we the Egyptians were the first to use herbal medicine.

The Department
The department of Pharmacognosy offers diverse types of courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels. For the under graduate level, the courses delivered include Botany, Medical botany, General Pharmacognosy, Chemistry of natural products as well as the very recent course in the quality control of herbal drugs. The applications of HPLC, GC and spectroscopic analysis were also included.

Medical botany is designed as prerequisite course to Pharmacognosy and Phytochemistry courses in order to help the students in the identification of natural drugs from plant kingdom as well as, their proper collection, storage and marketing according to official texts. While General Pharmacognosy courses deal with the identification of a natural drug in its natural form either entire or powdered using advanced physicochemical techniques.

The courses of chemistry of natural products and their applications in therapeutics are also covered. These courses are designed to deal with different classes of 2ry metabolites. Thus; the courses cover different methods of preparation, isolation and identification from their natural sources by chemical and chromatographic methods as well as their application in medicine and pharmaceutical industries. In addition, special emphasis regarding the of biosynthesis of natural products including carbohydrates, glycosides, bitter principles, volatile oils, alkaloids---- etc are also covered. The introduction of vast numbers of herbal drug in recent decade and obstacles faced in their analysis required the development of a new course viz., the quality control of herbal drug. Thus, provides the pharmacy graduate with necessary knowledge that distinguishes him from other being capable of solving the problem of herbal drug analysis.
